The a is long, however, in the future infinitive and participle: stâtûrus. The third person plural perfect is scanned by Vergil, Ovid and Propertius as steterunt instead of stetêrunt.
further notes
Omission of -v, -vi, -ve: not only are these formes often omitted in the tenses formed from the perfect base, it is also found in other cases, such as dêflê(vi)stî; petiî etc. for petîvî etc.; and often nô(vi)stî, nô(ve)rim, nô(vi)sse, etc.
Omission of -is: where i somes between two s's, -is is (rarely) omitted in poetry, e.g., dîxtî for dîxistî, extînxem for exstînxissem.
Where the interrogative particle -ne is appended to the second singular present indicative, the combination is sometimes shortened, e.g., viden for vidêsne; similarly shortened is (the adverb) satin for satisne.
